May 16: C/1808 R1 (Pons)
The Minor Planet Center has assigned the designation C/1808 R1, and the WGSBN has assigned the name Pons, to a comet reported by J.-L. Pons in September 1808.
This comet was not well-documented in the astronomical literature of the time and it did not receive a X/ designation. Investigations by G. W. Kronk and M. Meyer of correspondence between Pons and other astronomers have allowed the extraction of approximate positions for the comet on a number of nights and the calculation of an orbit.
The observations and orbit were published on
CBET 5258.
